Ashdon Players 2011 Pantomime
This pantomime was first performed by Ashdon Players in 1993 using an original script by John Brooker. The basic script was retained but the parts were changed to suit the existing company and the jokes were updated. The finished production resulted in a witty and colourful spectacle for the audience. On the way to the performances, the cast enjoyed some very funny rehearsals besides the usual angst. We had some new members of cast this year who brought down the average age of the performers and not only did they fit in well but gave very accomplished performances.
Instead of a opening with a big production number most members of the cast made a subdued but poignant entrance singing "Silent Night" with lanterns and low lighting. This theme was carried through to sunrise with Dave Tappin making a special appearance to sing "Sing a Song of London". Again this year we were aided by two members of Saffron Walden Music Hall Society who raised the vocal quality and managed to add some movement to some of the songs. The scenery was wonderful as usual, particularly the street scene which evoked the Dickensian era. We set a daunting task for our oily rags of building an office for Scrooge.
Thanks to all who took part in any way. As usual it was a wonderful team effort. The reaction from the audience in all of the three sell-out performances sounded as enthusiastic as ever.
